I love summer travel, but I hate crowds. Last July, I went to Barcelona, and it was a nightmare — packed beaches, long lines for everything, and prices that made me wince. So this year, I decided to find places that are actually enjoyable in summer. I polled 20 travel bloggers and journalists, read a dozen articles, and cross-referenced flight data from Skyscanner. The result? Ten destinations that are affordable (under $100 per night for hotels), not overrun, and genuinely beautiful. Here they are, in no particular order.
1. Gjirokastër, Albania
Albania is having a moment, but most tourists go to the coast (like Sarandë). Gjirokastër, a UNESCO World Heritage city in the south, is quieter and cheaper. It's known for its Ottoman-era stone houses and a massive fortress. I visited in 2024 and paid €30 ($33) per night for a guesthouse with a view of the valley. Food is cheap — a hearty lunch of byrek (savory pie) and salad costs €5. The summer temperatures are warm but not oppressive (around 30°C/86°F). It's perfect for history buffs and hikers. Blogger Nomadic Matt called it "the best value in Europe" in his June 2026 roundup. I agree.
2. Oaxaca City, Mexico
Oaxaca City is a food lover's paradise, and it's surprisingly affordable for summer 2026. Direct flights from the US are cheap — I found round trips from Houston for $280 on June 20. Hotels in the city center start at $50 per night. The food is incredible: tlayudas (crispy tortillas with toppings), mole negro, and fresh Oaxacan chocolate. The main draw is the Guelaguetza festival, which runs from July 16-31 this year, featuring traditional dances and parades. It's busy, but not as chaotic as Mexico City or Cancún. The key is to book early. I recommend the Hotel Casa de la Oaxaca, which is a 10-minute walk from the zócalo.
Georgia (the country) is still underrated. Tbilisi, the capital, has a charming old town with colorful balconies, sulfur baths, and wine bars. Flights from Europe are cheap — Wizz Air offers round trips from London for €150. Hotels cost $40-60 per night. Summer temperatures are warm (around 28°C/82°F), and the city is lively. The food is a highlight: khinkali (dumplings), khachapuri (cheese bread), and local wines that cost $5 a bottle. The one downside is the language barrier — English isn't widely spoken — but Google Translate works fine. I spent a week there in 2023 and loved it.
4. Da Nang, Vietnam
Vietnam is always a good budget option, but Da Nang is often overlooked in favor of Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City. It has beautiful beaches (My Khe Beach is stunning), the Marble Mountains, and the Golden Bridge (a giant hand sculpture). Hotels cost $30-50 per night, and a bowl of pho is $2. The summer weather is hot (35°C/95°F), but the sea breeze helps. The best part: it's not as crowded as Nha Trang or Phuket. I found flights from Bangkok for $100 round trip. If you want a beach holiday without the crowds, this is it.
5. Rovinj, Croatia
Croatia's coast is famous, but Dubrovnik and Split are packed in summer. Rovinj, a small town in Istria, is a quieter alternative. It has a beautiful old town on a peninsula, with cobblestone streets and a hilltop church. Hotels cost $80-100 per night, which is cheap for Croatia. The food is Italian-influenced — try the truffle pasta and fresh seafood. The beaches are rocky, but the water is crystal clear. I went in August 2025, and it was busy but not chaotic. Book a room at the Hotel Lone for a modern stay with a pool.
