I've been an AirPods Pro user since the original model came out in 2019. I loved the first version, thought the second was a nice upgrade, and waited impatiently for the third. Well, they're finally here. Apple announced the AirPods Pro 3 at their September event, and I got my hands on a pair last week. I've been wearing them everywhere — on the subway, at my desk, on walks, even in the shower (don't judge). After seven days of heavy use, I have thoughts. Lots of them.
What's New? Everything You Need to Know
The AirPods Pro 3 look similar to the previous generation, but there are changes. The stem is slightly shorter, and the touch controls now include a swipe gesture for volume — finally. No more fumbling for your phone. The case is also a bit smaller and now includes a lanyard loop, which I thought was silly until I almost dropped them on a train. The biggest upgrade is inside: a new H3 chip that promises better noise cancellation, improved sound quality, and longer battery life. Apple claims 6 hours of listening time with ANC on, up from 5.5 hours on the Pro 2. In my tests, I got about 6 hours and 15 minutes, so that checks out. The case adds another 24 hours, which is standard.
Noise Cancellation: This Is the Real Deal
I live in New York City, so I've tested noise cancellation in some of the loudest environments imaginable. The AirPods Pro 2 were good, but the Pro 3 are on another level. I wore them on the subway during rush hour, and the rumble of the train was reduced to a low hum. A baby crying two seats away became a distant whisper. The transparency mode is also improved — it sounds more natural, like you're not wearing earbuds at all. There's a new Adaptive Audio mode that blends ANC and transparency, automatically adjusting based on your environment. It sounds gimmicky, but it works. When I walked from a quiet street into a noisy café, the earbuds seamlessly switched to more isolation. I barely noticed the transition.
Sound Quality: Goodbye, Bass Lightness
I'll be honest: Apple's earbuds have never been the best-sounding in the world. They're good, but audiophiles usually prefer wired IEMs or competitors like Sony. The AirPods Pro 3 change that. The bass is fuller and more impactful, without being muddy. Mids are clear, and highs are crisp without harshness. I listened to Dua Lipa's 'Training Season' and felt the beat in my chest. Classical music like 'Clair de Lune' sounded delicate and detailed. The soundstage is wider, too — instruments feel more separated. Apple also introduced support for lossless audio over USB-C, but only with the new Vision Pro headset (which I don't have). So that's a bummer, but over Bluetooth, the quality is excellent. It's still not as good as a wired setup, but for wireless earbuds, these are among the best I've heard.
