Santorini in Summer 2026: How to Beat the Crowds and Still Have a Blast

I just got back from Santorini, and let me tell you—it’s beautiful, but it’s also a madhouse. Cruise ships disgorge thousands of people every day, and the main streets of Oia and Fira are wall-to-wall tourists. But I figured out a few tricks that made my trip genuinely amazing.

Time It Right

The biggest mistake people make is going to Oia for sunset. Everyone does it, and it’s a nightmare. I went at sunrise instead. The streets were empty, the light was golden, and I had the famous blue domes all to myself. It’s worth waking up at 5am—trust me.

Where to Stay

Skip the crowded towns. Stay in a smaller village like Pyrgos or Megalochori. They’re quieter, more authentic, and way cheaper. I stayed in a cave house in Pyrgos, and it was incredible. Plus, you get amazing views without the crowds.

Boat Tours Are the Secret

The best way to see the caldera is from the water. I took a small group boat tour that visited the hot springs, the volcano, and a quiet beach for lunch. We had the place almost to ourselves. It was way better than fighting for a spot on the cliffside.

Eat Like a Local

Restaurants with caldera views are overpriced and mediocre. Walk a block inland, and you’ll find family-run tavernas with better food for half the price. Try the fava (yellow split pea puree), tomato keftedes (fritters), and fresh grilled octopus. It’s the real Santorini.

Hike the Fira to Oia Trail

The 10km hike between Fira and Oia is stunning. It takes about 3-4 hours, and you get views of the caldera the whole way. Do it early in the morning before it gets hot. I saw maybe 20 people on the trail—compared to thousands in town.

Don’t Forget the Beaches

The red beach and white beach are famous, but they’re crowded and rocky. Instead, go to Perissa or Kamari—black sand beaches with good infrastructure. Or rent a quad and explore the southern coast. I found a tiny beach with nobody around, and it was heaven.

The Verdict

Santorini is still magical if you do it right. Avoid the peak hours, stay in a quiet village, and explore beyond the Instagram spots. It’s not a relaxing trip if you just follow the crowds. But with a little planning, you can have an unforgettable experience. I’d go back in a heartbeat.
