PS5 Slim vs Xbox Series X: Which Console Wins in 2026?

I’ve been a console guy my whole life. I owned a PS2, an Xbox 360, a PS4, and now both current-gen machines sit under my TV. For the past month, I’ve been swapping between them daily—playing the same games, testing features, and just living with them. Here’s what I’ve found.

Price and Value

The PS5 Slim dropped to $449 recently, while the Xbox Series X still sits at $499. That $50 difference matters when you’re on a budget. But the Xbox includes a better controller (in my opinion) and more storage out of the box. The PS5 Slim has 1TB, the Series X has 1TB too, but the Series X’s SSD is faster. Loading times are nearly identical in practice.

Game Library

This is where things get personal. PlayStation has been killing it with exclusives. God of War Ragnarok, Spider-Man 2, and The Last of Us Part I—all locked to PS5. Xbox has Starfield and Forza, but let’s be honest: Game Pass is the real killer app. For $15 a month, I have access to hundreds of games. I’ve played indie titles I’d never buy otherwise. It’s insane value.

Performance

Both run most games at 4K 60fps. The Series X technically has a slight edge in raw power—it can do 12 teraflops vs the PS5’s 10.3. But in real-world gaming, I couldn’t tell the difference. Call of Duty runs smooth on both. The PS5’s haptic feedback on the controller feels next-level for single-player games. For competitive shooters, Xbox’s controller is more comfortable for me.

Backward Compatibility

Xbox wins this easily. I can play original Xbox games from 2001 on my Series X. PS5 only goes back to PS4. If you have a huge old game collection, Xbox is the obvious choice.

Winner

I’m going with the PS5 Slim—but barely. The exclusives and controller innovation swayed me. If you’re a multiplayer-focused player or love Game Pass, get the Xbox. But for single-player stories, PS5 is unmatched.
